Overview
- On June 17 at 12:30 pm, 10–15 MNS members forcefully entered the Municipal Hospital in Vashi and confronted Medical Superintendent Dr. Rajesh Mhatre over a viral bribe video.
- Protesters hurled abuses, threatened and attempted to physically assault Dr. Mhatre, and symbolically draped a white cloth—used for covering bodies—around his neck.
- The demonstration followed a clip showing a contractual mortuary worker demanding Rs. 2,000 to wrap a deceased patient’s body, leading to the employee’s immediate dismissal.
- Vashi police have lodged an FIR under several Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provisions and Section 4 of the 2010 Maharashtra Medical Service Persons and Medical Service Institutions Act, and are serving notices to all accused.
- The clash highlights ongoing friction between political activists and municipal authorities over corruption allegations in public healthcare.
