MMRDA Suspends Two Senior Monorail Officials After August 19 Stalls as Expert Inquiry Begins

Overview

  • Chief Engineer (Signal & Telecom) Manish Soni and Security Manager Rajiv Gite were suspended after a review of incident SOPs by Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee.
  • An inquiry panel chaired by Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Vikram Kumar includes IIT Bombay’s Prof Himanshu Bahirat, CIDCO’s chief transport planner Geetha Pillai, and MMRDA’s Astik Pandey.
  • MMRDA described the action as a zero‑tolerance response to operational lapses and emphasized passenger safety and accountability.
  • On August 19, a train carrying 582 passengers stalled between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park at 6:38 pm and another with about 200 passengers halted between Acharya Atre and Wadala at 7:33 pm, with both trains towed and riders evacuated, including ladder rescues for the first train.
  • Ten new monorail rakes have been procured, seven have arrived and are on trial runs, and they will enter service once cleared to ease crowding and improve reliability.
