Overview

  • A committee led by Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Vikram Kumar with experts from IIT Bombay, CIDCO and MMRDA will investigate the August 19 failures and recommend fixes.
  • MMRDA attributed the primary fault to overcrowding that pushed a train beyond its 104-tonne design limit to about 109 tonnes, disrupting the current collector’s contact and cutting power.
  • Rescuers evacuated 582 people from a train stranded between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park, and a second stalled train was towed to a station for passenger deboarding with no fatalities reported.
  • Immediate operating changes include regulated boarding to control loads, a security guard and trained technician on every train, clearly marked emergency windows and added signage, and daily technical checks.
  • Capacity relief is in progress with two retrofitted rakes planned to raise the active fleet to seven, seven of ten new trains already on site undergoing trials, and safety certification pending before deployment.
