Overview
- The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has begun a Detailed Project Report to assess the technical, environmental and economic feasibility of an underground road network spanning about 70 kilometres.
- The plan is split into three phases: a 16-km Worli Sea Link–BKC–airport loop first, a 10-km East–West link next, and a 44-km North–South corridor to follow.
- The proposed tunnels would connect the Coastal Road, the BKC high-speed rail station, metro corridors and the airport loop, with aims to ease pressure on the Western Express Highway and SV Road.
- Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis endorsed the initiative, calling it a step toward seamless, multi-level connectivity across Mumbai.
- Reporting cites an estimated cost of ₹1.05 lakh crore and projects potential time savings such as Worli–airport in about 10 minutes, which remain projections pending detailed designs and approvals.
