MMRDA Starts DPR for 70-Km Mumbai Tunnel Network Linking Coastal Road, BKC and Airport

A feasibility-led DPR now under way will determine viability before any construction.

Overview

  • The plan envisions an underground road system in three phases: about 16 km from Worli Sea Link to BKC and the airport, a 10 km east–west link between EEH and WEH, and a 44 km north–south corridor.
  • Procurement for Phase I is in progress with consultant approval on September 30, tendering in early October, a pre-bid on October 17, and bid opening scheduled for November 17.
  • Officials describe the tunnels as a third mode of urban mobility designed to decongest WEH and SV Road, shift through-traffic below ground, reduce emissions, and free surface space.
  • The DPR will assess geology, traffic demand, environmental impact, ventilation, safety, design, and economic viability to shape alignments and implementation sequencing.
  • Parallel tunnel projects such as ThaneBorivali, Orange Gate–Marine Drive, and Goregaon–Mulund are advancing, with officials positioning the new network as part of a broader multi-layer strategy.
