MMRDA Drops Uttan-Dongri Depot for Metro 9, Shifts Rakes to Charkop

Public opposition over large-scale tree felling prompted a pivot to the existing Charkop facility.

Overview

  • Officials said the Uttan-Dongri car shed will not go ahead, though a formal executive approval is still pending.
  • The ₹733.24-crore depot contract awarded to the Rithwik Projects–Soma Enterprise joint venture will be terminated.
  • Trial runs continue using trains ferried from Charkop, with the Dahisar East–Kashigaon section targeted to open by December 2025.
  • An earlier 32-hectare depot plan in Bhayandar was also abandoned after local objections, and the Uttan-Dongri proposal involved cutting or transplanting over 11,000 trees including 1,406 cleared by MBMC.
  • MMRDA plans to house rakes at Charkop for now, shift capacity to the Mandale depot when ready, and pursue additional depots at Kanjurmarg and Mogharpada.
