MMRDA Breaks Ground on 13.9-Km Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension

The six-lane link targets 25–30 minute South MumbaiThane trips, easing pressure on the Eastern Express Highway.

Overview

  • The link from Anand Nagar (Thane) to Chheda Nagar (Ghatkopar) is designed to cut South MumbaiThane travel to about 25–30 minutes and improve commute reliability.
  • Interchanges span Mulund, Airoli, JVLR, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Mankhurd and Ghatkopar, with a seamless tie-in to the Anand Nagar–Saket Elevated Road for Samruddhi Expressway access.
  • A first-in-MMR single-pile, single-pier design will use 2.5-metre monopiles, 40-metre spans and 25-metre single-segment girders.
  • Plans include ramps at Mulund Check Naka, Airoli and Vikhroli and a 3+3 lane elevated toll plaza near Navghar Flyover to manage traffic flows.
  • MMRDA says alignment changes saved 127 Pink Trumpet trees and 4,175 compensatory saplings will be planted, with piling and pier casting underway after surveys and geotechnical work.
