Overview

  • On May 26, record early monsoon rainfall flooded the under-construction exit pit at Acharya Atre Chowk station after about 90 mm of rain in 90 minutes and a high tide overwhelmed Mumbai’s storm drains.
  • Approximately 11 lakh litres of water entered the station, prompting passenger evacuation and temporary suspension of services at Acharya Atre Chowk.
  • MMRC confirmed no water breached tunnels or tracks, and trains continued operating normally on the line, with reversals at Worli maintained.
  • Crews have cleared excess water and dried the station before initiating construction of a permanent flood wall to protect against future extreme rainfall and tide surges.
  • Phase 2A from BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk opened on May 10, and Phase 2B to Worli and Cuffe Parade is due in August on the 33.5 km underground corridor.
