MLS Approves Shift to July–May Season With May Playoffs Starting in 2027

A short transition in early 2027 and a winter break will align the league with global transfer windows as MLS finalizes details with the players’ union.

Overview

  • Owners approved the calendar change at a Palm Beach meeting, with the first full season set for July 2027 to May 2028 and a break from mid-December to early February with no January matches.
  • The league will stage a 14-game transition season from February to May 2027 with playoffs and MLS Cup, and those results will set qualification for the U.S. Open Cup, Canadian Championship, Leagues Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup.
  • Commissioner Don Garber said alignment with world schedules will improve transfer-market opportunities, reduce conflicts with international windows and give the playoffs uninterrupted prominence in May.
  • MLS said it is working with the MLSPA on a transition plan and plans to limit home dates in the coldest markets in December and February, projecting roughly 91% of games will still fall within today’s seasonal window.
  • Multiple reports say owners favor moving to a single league table with five regional divisions, though the league has not announced a final competition format.
