MLK Day 2026: Federal Holiday Brings Closures, Service Events—and No Free Entry at National Parks

Parks that charge admission will require payment on Monday under the Interior Department’s revised 2026 fee-free calendar.

Overview

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, the third Monday in January.
  • Federal offices and courts will be closed, banks will not open, and the U.S. Postal Service will suspend delivery for the holiday.
  • UPS will not run standard pickups or deliveries and some stores may close, while FedEx will operate on modified schedules.
  • The holiday remains a national day of service with parades, museum programs and volunteer events, including D.C.’s Peace Walk and an NMAAHC sing-along to Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday.”
  • The National Park Service removed MLK Day (and Juneteenth) from 2026 fee-free days, added dates such as Flag Day and Independence Day weekend, and flags are not lowered to half-staff for MLK Day under federal guidance.
