Overview
- Construction and safety approvals have been completed after Commissioner of Railway Safety inspections and 110 km/h trial runs.
- The broad-gauge link was built at an upgraded cost of Rs 5,021 crore under the Government’s Act East policy to connect Aizawl to India’s railway grid for the first time.
- Engineering works include 48 tunnels, 153 bridges with 55 major spans and India’s tallest 104-metre rail pier to navigate seismic and monsoon-prone terrain.
- Four new stations at Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang will serve as key passenger and freight nodes for Mizoram.
- Rail travel times are forecast to fall from eight hours by road to three hours between Silchar and Aizawl and to about 12 hours from Guwahati to Aizawl.
