Mizoram Reports 460 Foreigners Held Since 2020 as Drug Seizures Reach ₹770.95 Crore

Arrests peaking after Myanmar’s 2021 coup signal trafficking pressure that remains high in 2025.

Overview

  • Of the 460 foreign nationals detained since May 2020, 439 were from Myanmar, 18 from Bangladesh and three from other countries, according to police data.
  • Drugs worth over ₹106.56 crore were seized in January–May 2025, following annual totals of ₹43.43 crore in 2022, ₹189.66 crore in 2023 and ₹211.63 crore in 2024.
  • A total of 15,673 people were arrested in Mizoram over the five years, including 14,432 locals and 781 individuals from other Indian states.
  • Among the Myanmar nationals arrested, 185 were held for drug smuggling, 66 for visa violations, 43 for arms and explosives smuggling, 40 for theft and burglary, and nine each for murder and child sexual abuse.
  • Except for four Bangladesh nationals booked under the Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act, foreign detainees were held under the Foreigners Act.
