Overview

  • District officials in all 11 districts have completed training on the Foreigners Identification Portal and will start biometric enrolment this month.
  • The registration will cover roughly 35,000 refugees from Myanmar and 2,370 members of the Bangladeshi Bawm community sheltering in Mizoram since 2021.
  • Funding comes from a Rs 38 lakh allocation by the Ministry of Home Affairs under directives to document unauthorised migrants in the northeast.
  • A recent flare-up between the Chin National Defence Force and Chinland Defence Force prompted about 4,650 arrivals in Champhai district, most of whom have since returned.
  • The exercise aligns with Mizoram’s non-deportation stance and strengthens India’s immigration management along its borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh.
