Mizoram Logs 58% of Myanmar Refugees in Biometric Drive

Patchy internet access is slowing state teams' progress.

Overview

  • Under a July Ministry of Home Affairs directive, enrolment is being conducted through the Foreigners Identification Portal and Biometric Enrolment system.
  • Officials report 58.15% biometrics captured for 31,214 Myanmar nationals living across all 11 districts, with Champhai hosting the largest share.
  • For asylum seekers from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts, 10.84% of data has been recorded from a population of 2,354 concentrated in Lawngtlai, Lunglei and Thenzawl.
  • District teams cite frequent technical glitches and weak or absent connectivity in remote villages, which slows fieldwork and complicates visits outside organized camps.
  • The state is also sheltering 6,953 internally displaced people from Manipur, and officials say refugee counts can fluctuate due to cross-border movement.
