Mizoram Launches Statewide HIV Testing and Awareness Campaign

The initiative will cover 88 villages across 11 districts to combat infections officials say are almost entirely driven by unsafe sex or needle-sharing.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated the 2025 Intensified IEC Campaign and HIV Test Drive on August 12, mobilising community actors to expand testing across all 88 villages in 11 districts.
  • Health officials report that 97.38% of new HIV cases in 2024–25 were linked to unprotected sex (68.13%) and sharing needles (29.25%), with 2,471 infections recorded last year.
  • Since the virus was first detected in 1990, Mizoram has logged 32,994 HIV-positive individuals, and its adult prevalence remains more than ten times the national average, according to NACO.
  • Authorities estimate roughly 97% of HIV infections in Mizoram are preventable but warn that high-risk behaviours persist despite widespread awareness.
  • Lalduhoma urged churches, the Young Mizo Association, health workers and village leaders to spearhead outreach that discourages drug use and unprotected sex.
