Mizoram Extends Refugee Biometric Enrolment to Champhai and Lunglei

Authorities commenced biometric data collection in Champhai, Lunglei following a 16-person Serchhip pilot to prepare for a full-scale August 5 rollout using MHA-funded NIC systems.

The District Level Committee on Displaced Persons meeting on July 11 in Serchhip had discussed Biometric Enrolment of Displaced Persons through Foreigner’s Identification Portal for refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh.

  • Sixteen Myanmarese nationals were enrolled during a pilot session in Serchhip’s Chanmari locality on July 30 using the Foreigners Identification Portal & Biometric Enrolment system.
  • Biometric and biographic data collection began in Champhai, Lunglei on July 31 under a Ministry of Home Affairs directive.
  • The state government has sanctioned Rs 38 lakh and the MHA will fund a comprehensive drive to register over 34,000 Myanmar and Bangladeshi refugees across all 11 districts starting August 5.
  • The exercise records fingerprints, iris scans and demographic information through the National Informatics Centre’s portal to issue official identification documents.
  • Officials stress that the registration is solely for identification purposes and does not involve any deportation measures.
