Mizoram Crackdown Yields Cash and Heroin Seizures as CM Flags Off Drug-Free Rally

Overview

  • On August 11 Assam Rifles intercepted a vehicle at Zote village in Champhai district, arresting two people after seizing roughly Rs 60 lakh in unaccounted cash and 94.6 grams of heroin.
  • Mizoram Excise and Narcotics officials arrested three people, including two women, in Aizawl on August 12 for possession of 323 grams of heroin across three locations.
  • Chief Minister Lalduhoma led a “Fight Against Drugs” rally in Aizawl under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, with more than 600 students joining the march to raise awareness.
  • Mizoram’s 510-kilometre border with Myanmar and its proximity to the Golden Triangle continue to facilitate trafficking of heroin and methamphetamine through drop sites and concealed consignments.
  • Authorities have recorded 49 drug-related deaths since January and are pursuing prosecutions under the NDPS Act alongside civil-society groups to bolster prevention and rehabilitation efforts.
