Mizoram Confirms African Swine Fever in Wild Boars Near Saipum as Kolasib Imposes Pork and Hunting Bans

The wildlife detection prompts heightened controls to protect domestic herds in a state hit hard since 2021.

Overview

  • Laboratory testing of bone marrow by the state veterinary department and the College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, Selesih, confirmed ASF in highly decomposed wild boar carcasses found near Saipum earlier in September.
  • The Kolasib district administration ordered a ban on the sale of pork and smoked wild animals, restricted movement of pigs and pork products, and prohibited hunting and trade of wild-animal meat across the district.
  • The Saipum village council separately barred hunting and the bringing of wild-animal remains into the village following reports of carcasses on September 7 and 18.
  • Officials stress that ASF is lethal to pigs but does not infect humans, prompting surveillance and control measures to prevent spillover into domestic herds.
  • Mizoram continues to battle a protracted outbreak, with officials reporting over 9,380 pig deaths and thousands culled since mid-March 2025 and around 72,000 deaths with more than 53,000 culls since 2021.
