Mizoram Climbs to No. 3 in HIV Prevention Ranking, Still Has India’s Highest Adult Prevalence

Officials report a steady decline in new infections since 2018.

Overview

  • The state improved from fifth in 2024–25 to third in 2025–26 on the national HIV prevention scorecard, yet its adult prevalence stands at 2.75% versus the 0.20% national average.
  • From April 2024 to November 2025, 3,257 people tested positive out of more than 140,000 samples, including 953 women and 179 pregnant women.
  • Of the new cases, 70.4% were sexually transmitted and 27.3% were linked to needle sharing, with infections concentrated among adults aged 25–34.
  • Mizoram operates 14 antiretroviral therapy centres with 18,355 patients currently receiving treatment.
