Mitre Line to Halt Tigre Branch Jan. 10–Feb. 28 for Safety Upgrades

The shutdown reflects an emergency modernization program to improve safety.

Overview

  • From January 10 to February 28, the Tigre branch will be fully suspended, while the José León Suárez and Bartolomé Mitre branches will operate only between their provincial termini and Belgrano R without reaching Retiro.
  • Trenes Argentinos says the concentrated summer window will allow crews to renew 7,700 meters of hard-to-access track and repair key bridges, including those at Figueroa Alcorta and Dorrego.
  • The works fall under the national rail emergency and include third-rail upgrades plus the replacement of century-old signaling at Retiro, which requires a full power cut that prevents electric trains from entering the terminal.
  • New equipment being installed includes 28 signals with ATS balises, 16 point machines and 70 track-circuit cases, followed by dynamic safety tests and training for signaling staff.
  • Authorities report 20 km of new track already installed toward a 40 km renewal plan, and direct passengers to the government’s official site for alternative travel options and service updates.
