Mitchell High School Evacuated After Cell Phone Battery Emits Fumes

  • CSFD responded around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday after a phone in the main building began smoking and releasing gases.
  • Multiple crews, including the HAZMAT team, evacuated the campus and conducted air monitoring throughout the school.
  • Crews evaluated more than twenty students for possible exposure, and six reported dizziness with no hospital transports.
  • Students and staff were allowed back inside between 9:20 and 9:30 a.m. after safety checks confirmed normal readings.
  • CSFD is investigating the battery malfunction, and one local report described the device as using a lithium battery.
