Missunde III Ferry Returns to Service After Cooling Pump Failure

The pump swap restored safe use of two transverse thrusters but officials say technical fixes and contingency plans remain under review.

Overview

  • The electric Schleifähre Missunde III stopped again because a cooling-water pump that cools the inverters for the ferry’s transverse thrusters failed, making two thrusters unsafe to operate.
  • After the defective pump was replaced, the Landesbetrieb completed multiple successful test runs and scheduled the ferry to resume crossings at 06:00 on Wednesday, September 16.
  • Each outage forces drivers onto an almost 40-kilometre detour and affects roughly 120,000 vehicles and 50,000 bicycles that normally cross between Brodersby and Kosel each year.
  • Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen ordered an immediate review of the vessel’s problems at the end of July and asked officials to study reactivating Missunde II or commissioning a new ferry as alternatives.
  • The Landesbetrieb says it is working urgently with external repair teams and continuing the ministerial review to identify durable technical and operational solutions for reliable service.
