  • Scheffer's husband, who had been experiencing unexplained illnesses, installed a hidden camera in their kitchen after suspecting his wife of poisoning him. The camera allegedly captured Scheffer adding the poisonous plant to his smoothie.
  • Lily of the valley is a highly toxic plant known to slow down the heart and cause irregular heart rhythm, symptoms that Scheffer's husband had been experiencing.
  • When questioned by police, Scheffer allegedly admitted to adding the plant to her husband's smoothie with the intent to harm him, knowing that ingestion could result in death.
  • Scheffer is currently being held without bail at the Cole County Jail. Her school has been notified of the charges and she has been placed on leave.
