Mississippi State Auditor Flags Questionable Spending by Nonprofits in Health and TANF Grants

The findings were referred to the Mississippi attorney general for potential action.

Overview

  • State Auditor Shad White released an audit naming nonprofit recipients of MSDH and MDHS funds that allegedly spent taxpayer money on items auditors said were improper or undocumented.
  • My Brother's Keeper received a $250,000 MSDH subgrant, and auditors said 55% went to salaries and administration instead of program services.
  • The report says MBK was reimbursed nearly $7,000 for incentive gift cards and nearly $45,000 for meal subscriptions, upscale grocery gift cards, and gym memberships without adequate MSDH documentation.
  • Auditors also flagged 100 Black Men of Jackson for spending $2,400 on gift cards, headphones, and speakers, plus nearly $2,000 on 90 T-shirts from a $40,000 grant to address health disparities.
  • The Juanita Sims Doty Foundation received more than $2.4 million in TANF-linked MDHS funds, and IRS filings show its executive director was paid $106,050 in 2022 and $118,447 in 2023.
