Missing Pilot Found Dead After Ultralight Crash in Indiana County

State police say an aviation unit located the wreckage, which is under investigation as an accident.

  • David Edward Wittmer, 75, disappeared Wednesday evening after taking off between 6 and 6:30 p.m. to practice touch-and-go landings near Church Street in Young Township.
  • A Pennsylvania State Police Aviation Patrol Unit member found the crashed ultralight around 10:30 a.m. Thursday in a corn field along Coal Run Road, less than a mile from the takeoff site.
  • Wittmer was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities have not released a cause of death.
  • Investigators earlier located his truck near the field and his cellphone inside a nearby camper he had been using.
  • State police notified the Federal Aviation Administration, and volunteers from the Coal Run/McIntyre Volunteer Fire Department and Port Vue’s Vigilant Hose Company assisted in the search.
