Missing California Dog Found 2,000 Miles Away in Illinois, Reunited via Microchip

A microchip scan quickly connected authorities with the registered owner.

Overview

  • Opie, a 5-year-old corgi–shepherd mix, was found on Sept. 28 in Itasca, Illinois, more than 2,000 miles from his home in Bieber, California, two months after vanishing during a storm.
  • Itasca police scanned a current microchip, the chip company notified the registered owner, and the dog was transferred to DuPage County Animal Services on Sept. 29.
  • The owner flew to Illinois and reunited with Opie on Oct. 1 before starting the drive back to California.
  • When found, the dog was wearing a collar with a different name, and officials have not determined how he traveled across the country.
  • Animal-services staff emphasized keeping microchip details up to date and directed owners to the American Animal Hospital Association’s registry lookup tool.
