Mirabai Chanu Takes World Silver in 48kg With 199kg Total as Ri Song-gum Sets Records

A final 115kg lift sealed second place by one kilogram after a move to 48kg following a long injury layoff.

  • Chanu totaled 199kg (84kg snatch, 115kg clean and jerk) to win her third World Championships medal and second silver.
  • Defending champion Ri Song-gum dominated with world records of 122kg in clean and jerk and 213kg in total after a 91kg snatch.
  • Chanu cleared 84kg in snatch but missed 87kg twice, then went three-for-three in clean and jerk at 109kg, 112kg and 115kg.
  • Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen took bronze at 198kg (88kg + 110kg) as Chanu edged her by one kilogram on the final attempt.
  • The medal comes in Chanu’s second international event since Paris 2024 after a Commonwealth tune-up in August, narrowly short of her 200kg target.
