Minnesota Inmate's Death Sparks Lawsuit Against Hennepin County Jail

Lucas Bellamy's family alleges inhumane treatment and negligence, highlighting a pattern of 15 inmate deaths since 2015.

Lucas Bellamy, a 41-year-old inmate at Hennepin County Jail in Minnesota, died of a perforated bowel after allegedly being ignored by jail workers despite severe pain and pleas for medical help.
Bellamy had informed the jail staff that he had ingested a bag of drugs during his arrest, and was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. He was returned to jail with instructions to return to the emergency department if he exhibited any concerning symptoms.
A lawsuit filed by Bellamy's family alleges that he was treated inhumanely, and that his death could have been prevented with proper medical treatment.
The lawsuit also points out that Bellamy's death is among 15 inmate deaths at the jail since 2015, alleging that checks on inmate well-being have fallen short of standards.
Bellamy's family, represented by attorney Jeff Storms, has called on Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison to investigate the case.
