- District leaders held a press briefing on Friday, Sept. 25 to release more detail on three transformation options that each name at least 14 schools for closure or unprogramming and that could total as many as 15–16 sites depending on the model.
- Officials say the proposals respond to long-term enrollment decline and excess capacity — roughly 12,000 empty seats in a system built for about 42,000 students while enrollment is under 30,000 — and aim to concentrate staff and programs in fewer buildings.
- The district released projected budgets showing only modest operating savings from closures after utility and transportation cuts, with net savings estimated at roughly $720,000 to $2.3 million even as the general fund cost would rise slightly under the plans.
- MPS says about 86–88% of students would not need to change schools but all options include mergers, boundary changes and relocated programs, with district leaders warning an estimated small number of families might choose to leave the district.
- Parents, staff, the teachers' union and some city council members have pushed back over transparency, transition costs and staffing impacts, and the district has scheduled community meetings from Sept. 30 to Oct. 9 before a public comment period ahead of a potential November vote for 2027–28 changes.
