Minneapolis Police Arrest Lake Street Vandal as Nationwide Anti-ICE Protests Grow

The arrest caps a weekend of nationwide actions sparked by the ICE killing of Renee Good.

Overview

  • Minneapolis police said Francis David Steinhauer, 24, was booked on probable-cause property damage after officers saw him spray-painting a Metro Transit bus and multiple Lake Street buildings during a march.
  • Roughly 30 people were detained and cited after late-night demonstrations targeted the Canopy by Hilton and the Depot Renaissance hotels, where protesters believed federal officers were staying.
  • Police reported about $6,000 in broken windows and graffiti at the Depot Renaissance and said objects including snow, ice and rocks were thrown at officers and vehicles during dispersal.
  • Authorities declared an unlawful assembly near the hotels, issued dispersal orders, and deployed about 200 officers from MPD, the Minnesota State Patrol and the Department of Natural Resources.
  • Indivisible’s ‘ICE Out for Good’ coalition organized more than 1,000 events nationwide over the weekend, as the FBI leads the investigation into Good’s shooting after assuming control from the state BCA.
