Mini‑van Rolls on King Island, Ten People Injured

Limited local hospital capacity required air transfers to Melbourne during a police investigation.

Overview

  • The mini-van rolled down an embankment on South Road near Pearshape at about 4:20pm on Friday and all ten people aboard were injured.
  • Tasmania Police say the injuries are serious but not believed to be life-threatening and the cause of the crash is still under active investigation.
  • Emergency crews, including the State Emergency Service and local volunteers, were joined by medical teams flown from Hobart and fixed-wing aircraft from Air Ambulance Victoria.
  • Three of the most seriously injured patients were flown to Melbourne hospitals with one taken to The Alfred in a serious condition and the others treated at King Island District Hospital.
  • The incident highlights King Island's reliance on air medevacs for major trauma and it has left South Road closed or partially closed while police manage the scene.
