MiniStop Halts In-Store Prepared Foods Nationwide After Expiration-Label Falsification as Osaka Plans Inspections

The chain paused sales at 1,786 stores with in-store kitchens pending corrective measures.

Overview

  • Osaka Prefecture will conduct on-site inspections at three outlets under the Food Labeling Act following the disclosure.
  • MiniStop suspended production and sales of handmade onigiri, bento and deli items at all stores with in-store kitchens, stopping onigiri and bento from August 9 and prepared foods from August 18.
  • An internal probe confirmed falsified labels at 23 stores across seven prefectures: Saitama, Tokyo, Aichi, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo and Fukuoka.
  • Falsification methods included delaying expiration labels by two to three hours after production, relabeling shelf items to extend dates and double-labeling.
  • The issue surfaced after a June 24 discovery of a double-labeled product, and no health-related complaints have been confirmed.
