MINI, Deus Ex Machina Unveil JCW ‘Skeg’ EV and ‘Machina’ ICE One-Offs at IAA Munich

The bespoke concepts explore divergent identities for John Cooper Works by pairing a surf-inspired lightweight EV with a rally-leaning combustion build.

Overview

  • The two one-offs were revealed on September 6 at IAA Mobility and are displayed at the MINI Pavilion in Munich through September 14.
  • The Skeg is an electric J01 rated at 190 kW that retains a 54.2 kWh battery and uses fiberglass body panels to cut weight by about 15%, with MINI claiming gains in acceleration and range.
  • The Machina is a petrol F66 delivering 170 kW with widened fenders, bonnet-mounted auxiliary lights, a functional diffuser, an exposed roll cage, 5-point harnesses and a hydraulic handbrake.
  • Both cars carry a white X on the roof as a co-creation marker, with visual direction by Deus creative director Carby Tuckwell, graphics by Matt Willey and design leadership from MINI’s Holger Hampf.
  • A MINI JCW x Deus apparel capsule launches on September 8 at IAA before rolling out globally via Deus retail and online channels, and the cars are presented as non-production design studies.
