Minedu Deploys 20 Modular Domes to Chupaca After July Junín Quake

The domes aim to keep classes running pending technical inspections that will decide where more units are needed.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Education sent a first batch of 20 prefabricated dome classrooms that arrived in Chupaca and began site preparation and installation over the weekend with the first units expected to be operable within a week.
  • The deployment is part of a larger plan to deliver 83 domes in total, with PRONIED coordinating transport, furniture and installation while Minedu continues its on‑site damage assessments.
  • Technical inspections by the regional education authority and UGELs raised the count of affected schools from an initial 20 to 44, and local officials say as many as 51 schools show damage with about 26 likely to require demolition.
  • Local education leaders warned the dome design may be inadequate for the highland climate and stressed the need for prefabricated classrooms, cleared and leveled land, and municipal support to finish installation on time.
  • Students and teachers aim to resume classes around August 10, but that target depends on completing inspections, demolitions where needed and the staged installation of additional domes.
