Overview

  • Participants with high initial MIND diet adherence had a 9% lower risk of Alzheimer’s and related dementias, rising to a 13% reduction among African American, Latino and white subgroups.
  • Individuals who increased their MIND diet adherence over a decade experienced a 25% lower risk of dementia compared with those whose adherence declined.
  • Researchers analyzed dietary data from nearly 93,000 U.S. adults aged 45 to 75 in the Multiethnic Cohort Study, with more than 21,000 developing dementia over several decades.
  • The MIND diet combines Mediterranean and DASH principles by emphasizing leafy greens, whole grains, berries, nuts, beans, fish and olive oil while limiting red meat, butter, cheese, fried foods and sweets.
  • Variation in protective effects among Asian American and Native Hawaiian participants suggests the need for culturally tailored dietary recommendations.
