Minagawa Osamu, Voice of “Kuroneko no Tango,” Dies at 62

The former child prodigy who helped define Japanese children's music will be honored at Ennyū-ji Shishinden on July 28.

Overview

  • Minagawa succumbed to chronic renal failure on July 23 in Tokyo at the age of 62.
  • He shot to national fame in 1969 at age six with the record “Kuroneko no Tango,” which sold over two million copies.
  • Following his voice change, he left both the Hibari Children’s Choir and the entertainment world before returning in 2004 to lead the choir.
  • He took over as representative of the Hibari Children’s Choir after his aunt Kazuko Minagawa’s tenure and continued her legacy after her death in 2014.
  • His funeral service is set for July 28 at Ennyū-ji Shishinden in Meguro-ku, Tokyo, with his sister Reiko Sakai as chief mourner.
