Milwaukee Reports Crime Drop Even as Homicides Rise in Q3 Review

City leaders stress prevention via school partnerships to address conflict-driven, youth-involved violence.

Overview

  • MPD tallied 110 homicides through Sept. 30, up from 102 in the same period of 2024, an increase of about 8 percent.
  • Overall reported crime fell roughly 16 percent year to date, with robberies down 27 percent and aggravated assaults down 22 percent.
  • Non-fatal shootings decreased 22 percent from last year and are about 40 percent lower than in 2023.
  • Carjackings dropped by roughly half as officials said many recent killings stemmed from minor disputes that escalated, including cases involving children.
  • Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Chief Jeffrey Norman and District Attorney Kent Lovern presented the Q3 data and urged community partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools, noting the local homicide rise contrasts with national declines.
