Militia Leader Matthew Krol Sentenced to Over 4 Years for Jan. 6 Capitol Riot Assault
Krol, known for his association with the Wolverine Watchmen, attacked officers with a stolen police baton during the riot.
- Matthew Thomas Krol, a self-proclaimed militia leader from Michigan, was sentenced to over four years in prison for assaulting police officers with a stolen baton during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
- Krol, 65, was caught on video attacking three officers, including Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell, who was left with a bloody and swollen right hand.
- Krol is also known to have associated with members of the Wolverine Watchmen, a paramilitary group involved in a 2020 plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
- Despite his connections, Krol is not accused of involvement in the kidnapping plot. However, he has expressed a willingness to engage in mob violence to achieve political objectives.
- More than 1,200 people have been charged with Capitol riot-related federal crimes, with over 700 sentenced to terms of imprisonment ranging from three days to 22 years.
