Military Court Gives Novosibirsk Resident 14 Years for Treason and Terrorism Financing

The ruling highlights a growing wave of closed military-court cases that apply treason or terrorism statutes to civilians.

Overview

  • Russia’s Second Eastern District Military Court sentenced Danil Likhanov to 14 years, ordering the first three years in prison and the remainder in a strict-regime colony, with a one-year restriction of freedom and a two-year ban on administering or posting to online platforms; the verdict has not yet taken legal effect.
  • The court said Likhanov sent cryptocurrency from October 2023 to April 2024 to wallets used to fund the Russian Volunteer Corps, designated a terrorist group in Russia, and posted in a public Telegram group content that included a call for terrorist acts.
  • According to the court’s account, Likhanov established contact on Telegram in 2023 with a member of the Russian Volunteer Corps who is accused of treason and listed as internationally wanted.
  • Separately, Mediazona reported that the Central District Military Court in Yekaterinburg convicted 18-year-old Kazan resident Dmitry Novikov and gave him eight years after alleging he photographed a plant entrance for the Freedom of Russia Legion in a closed trial where the court ordered his phone destroyed and a seized computer returned to his father; prosecutors had sought nine years.
  • Convictions for state treason have surged since 2022, with 16 cases that year, 39 in 2023, 145 in 2024, and first-half 2025 counts ranging from 105 (Sever.Realii) to 177 (First Department).
