Ethnic Clashes Result in Rising Death Toll as Police Officials are Targeted; Oversight of Helipad Construction Site and Security Convoy Ambushed by Suspected Kuki Militants
- Chingtham Anand, a Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), was shot dead by suspected Kuki militants while observing the construction of a helipad in Moreh, a border town on the Myanmar border.
- In a separate incident, a security convoy was ambushed near the village of Sinam in Tengnoupal district, resulting in two policemen sustaining multiple bullet wounds.
- Ethnic clashes between the majority Meitei and the minority Kuki communities started on May 3 over disagreements related to the distribution of government benefits and job quotas, resulting in at least 180 deaths this year.
- In response to the escalating violence, the government launched a joint security operation in Moreh and its surrounding areas to apprehend the culprits, while the state cabinet declared that no illegal armed personnel would be allowed in or around Moreh.
- A series of arrests have been made in connection with the violence, with Indian police arresting more than ten people from Myanmar, accused of illegally entering the country and stealing from abandoned houses.
