Senior Congress leader Milind Deora has resigned from the party, ending his family's 55-year relationship with the organization.
Deora's resignation comes amid his expressed displeasure over the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena claiming the Mumbai South Lok Sabha seat, which he and his father had previously served as MPs for.
Deora is expected to join the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh alleges that the timing of Deora's departure was determined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Deora had recently been appointed the joint treasurer of the All India Congress Committee.
