Milan’s Scalo Romana Olympic Village Handed Over for Milano-Cortina 2026

The complex now passes to organizers for fit-out ahead of its planned conversion into a 1,700-bed subsidized student residence.

Overview

  • The village was completed in 30 months and delivered 30 days early, with keys formally transferred on September 30 to Fondazione Milano Cortina 2026 under the agreement with COIMA Sgr.
  • Organizers now take charge of the 105,000-square-meter site to equip dining, gym and communal areas to host about 1,700 athletes and delegations across six prefabricated buildings.
  • Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini said the unfinished ground-floor dining hall requires an estimated €7–8 million and signaled the government could cover the extra costs, with a decision expected quickly.
  • After the Games, the development is slated to become Italy’s largest subsidized student residence with 1,700 beds at Via Lorenzini, plus 320 additional subsidized and public apartments in the wider neighborhood.
  • Built by Italian firms, the project was designed to minimize reconversion work, earned the British Safety Council’s 2025 International Safety Award, and will repurpose about 10,000 square meters of athlete-service space for community use.
