Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics Begin Wednesday as Organizers Face Readiness Scrutiny

The Feb. 6 Opening Ceremony at Milan’s San Siro features Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli and will air live on NBC and Peacock.

Overview

  • Training and preliminary competition start Feb. 4, with curling, skiing, luge, snowboarding, figure skating and ice hockey preceding the Feb. 6 ceremony, which begins at 2 p.m. ET and is slated for about three hours.
  • Photo reports and a leaked internal memo detail unfinished work at Cortina’s Tofana gondola and Curling Olympic Stadium and issues at a Milan hockey arena, with transport pressures leading Cortina schools to plan closures on Feb. 10–12.
  • U.S. coverage will air on NBC, USA Network and CNBC, with every event streaming on Peacock and a primetime encore of the Opening Ceremony on NBC and Peacock Friday evening.
  • Russian journalists’ accreditations will carry a neutral “INO” designation and Russian and Belarusian flags and symbols are prohibited at all venues, according to TASS.
  • Forecasts pointing to warmer conditions have organizers relying on extensive artificial snowmaking at Alpine sites, with reports indicating production exceeding 3 million cubic yards to ensure race courses.
