Milan Approves 2026 Tourist Tax Increase for Olympics, Up to €10 Per Night

Authorized by a new national decree for Olympic areas, the levy will split additional revenue between state Olympic projects and local tourism uses.

Overview

  • City officials approved the 2026 adjustment on Nov. 13 and plan to send the measure to the Economy Ministry by Nov. 15.
  • From Jan. 1, nightly charges will be €10 at four- and five-star hotels, €7.40 at three-star, €5 at two-star, €4 at one-star, €9.50 for short‑term rentals and B&Bs, €7 for holiday homes, and €3 for hostels and outdoor sites.
  • The dl Anticipi permits municipalities within 30 km of Olympic venues to add up to €5 per night, with half of the extra revenue going to the state and half reserved for local tourism and cultural purposes.
  • Officials framed the move as necessary to balance municipal finances under constraints tied to Olympic works.
  • Hotel and short‑term rental groups condemned the increase, warning of pressure on families and business travel, citing projections of up to a 30% drop in tourist flows and a 317% two‑year jump for short‑term rental levies.
