An extraordinary party conference in February 2026 will choose her successor.

Overview

  • Kiel mayor Ulf Kämpfer won the SPD members’ ballot for lead candidate with 79.76% to Serpil Midyatli’s 20.24%.
  • Midyatli told the state executive she is relinquishing the chair and proposed Kämpfer to take over the post.
  • The result came from 6,228 participants with 6,157 valid votes and is binding for delegates of a list party conference.
  • Kämpfer, 53, previously served as environmental state secretary under Robert Habeck and has led Kiel since 2014.
  • He does not plan to run again as Kiel’s administrative head and will now prepare the 2027 state campaign as Spitzenkandidat, while Midyatli manages a structured transition.
