Midea Recalls 1.7 Million Window Air Conditioners After Mold Growth Reports

  • The recall covers about 1.7 million U and U+ series units sold in the U.S. and nearly 46,000 additional units sold in Canada between March 2020 and May 2025 under ten brand names.
  • Federal officials and Midea received 152 reports of mold buildup inside the recalled air conditioners, including 17 cases of respiratory infections or allergic reactions linked to exposure.
  • Impacted models span 8,000-, 10,000- and 12,000-BTU window units retailed for $280 to $500 at Costco, Home Depot, Best Buy, Menards and online outlets such as Amazon.
  • Midea’s recall program offers either a technician-installed drain plug repair or a DIY kit, with customers eligible for full or prorated refunds based on purchase or manufacture date.
