Middlesbrough Sequences Roadworks to Keep Traffic Flowing Before Long A172/A174 Bridge Upgrade

The council is prioritising short-term fixes to preserve capacity ahead of months of interchange work.

Overview

  • Temporary repairs on Ladgate Lane began on February 24 and are expected to take about ten days, with concrete supports enabling both lanes to reopen until a permanent fix later this year.
  • Broughton Avenue resurfacing starts Wednesday, February 25, with evening closures from 7pm to midnight for about three weekday nights, subject to weather.
  • During the resurfacing, residents have been asked to remove vehicles, vehicular access may be restricted at times, pedestrian access will be maintained, and emergency access will be facilitated.
  • The A172 Marton Road/A174 Interchange upgrade starts Monday, March 2 and runs to autumn 2026, including concrete repairs, new waterproofing, kerbs and footways, resurfacing, and new pedestrian fencing and a vehicle safety barrier.
  • Drivers are warned to expect delays at the interchange with temporary lights, occasional overnight lane and full closures, left-turn-only movements from A174 slip roads to Stokesley Road, and no right turns when crossing the bridge.
