Microsoft Unveils Redesigned Copilot That Combines Chat, Code and Autopilot for Enterprises

The change pairs always-on agents, sandboxed code generation, governance, usage-based pricing to give IT teams clearer control over security and costs.

Overview

  • Microsoft unveiled the redesigned Copilot on Friday, Sept. 25, and has begun a staged rollout with Home and Code entering the Frontier early‑access program and Autopilot set for private preview by month’s end.
  • The app centers on three tabs—Home for chat and Cowork with full Word, Excel and PowerPoint inside Copilot, Code for natural‑language app and automation building, and Autopilot for persistent, long‑running agents.
  • Autopilot runs inside a customer’s tenant with its own identity, memory, compute and workspace and includes permissions, audit logs and governance controls designed to address enterprise security and compliance concerns.
  • Code uses the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot, runs in sandboxed tenant‑hosted environments to build apps and dashboards from plain language prompts, and allows colleagues to share cloud‑hosted internal tools.
  • Microsoft shifted Copilot’s commercial model to per‑user licenses for routine features plus usage‑based billing for agentic and coding workloads, and introduced FinOps and agent management tools to help admins cap spend and set policy.
