Overview
- Microsoft began a staged rollout on Thursday with a small group of Windows Insiders and says mobile and web waves will expand in mid‑August while Windows and macOS follow in mid‑September.
- Several consumer features will be retired on or after August 18, 2026, including Group Chats, AI Podcasts, Copilot Labs experiments and Deep Research, and users should export any content they want to keep before that date.
- Most chats and user data will move automatically into the unified Copilot, files generated by Copilot will migrate to OneDrive subject to users' storage limits, and some services may be temporarily unavailable during migration.
- Personal Microsoft accounts and work or school (Microsoft Entra ID) accounts will both be supported in the single app but will remain strictly separated so enterprise security, compliance and admin controls stay in place.
- Microsoft frames the merge as infrastructure work for a planned Copilot super app due this quarter that will combine chat, coding (GitHub Copilot), cowork tools and new agent features under Jacob Andreou’s leadership and follows rising commercial adoption of Copilot.
