Overview

  • Authenticator blocked new password saves in June and disabled autofill in July before scheduling a complete deletion on August 1.
  • Users must set up biometric or PIN-based passkeys in the app to maintain passwordless sign-in functionality.
  • All existing passwords have been synced to Microsoft Edge’s autofill system and can be accessed there after August 1.
  • Non-Edge users can export their credentials using the app’s Export Passwords tool and import them into other password managers.
  • Microsoft cites more than 7,000 password attacks per second in 2024 as justification for the move, though many sites still lack passkey support.
